Corporate TrainingLet’ talk about coaching in our training.

Coaching in training allows you to work out which approach is best suited to your group, or individual, needs.

How to increase the power and impact of your training.

You can increase the power and impact of your training if you:

• Understand the purpose of each intervention you make on participants

• Anticipate the likely impact of that intervention on the participant/s

• Select the appropriate intervention for each situation

• Use each intervention skilfully and sensitively

So these interventions are named according to what you are trying to achieve when you are coaching in the moment and they fall into two groups:

Directive: (Push)

Where the trainer intends to take the leading role on behalf of the learner, by giving advice, guidance, instructions and information, or by raising awareness through offering feedback and confronting the behaviour apparent in the training environment.

Facilitative: (Pull)

The facilitative approach happens when the trainer intends to help the learner to be autonomous and to take responsibility for themselves and for their own learning through questioning and supporting.

There is a popular saying that: “we judge others by their actions, but ourselves by our intentions”. To that end I would suggest that the learner is likely to react to your style by what they perceive of your visible behaviour.

To put it another way when it comes to walking the talk, if your words don’t match your behaviour people will believe what you do, not what you say.

So when faced with a tricky participant it’s not enough just to select and employ a suitable intervention. You must also consider whether it’s important that the learner, too, sees you operating in this way.

Whaddya reckon?
