What is Team Work

I was recently on assignment in the Seychelles off the east coast of Africa.

It was a fun piece of work in an amazing location.  I’ve written a story about the resort here.

I worked with the fantastic leadership team of a Five Star Resort, and the flip chart on this post was a great way to start a discussion about, “What is team work?”

I opened the flip chart and took the time to ask participants which word or which part of the quote made the most sense to them.  I used ORID as a way to get the discussion going.  The input I got was great to draw on as I continued the teamwork session.

The beauty of this work has been the involvement of ALL staff.  The General Manager realized the value of involving his whole team in the change process, and all participants were present for the whole three days.

It was a privilege running this three-day training program for the most senior team in this organization.

A Top Team on Top

A Top Team on Top

Patrick Lencioni says it best in his landmark book, The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team,  “The team you are a part of is more important than the team you manage.”

More often than not in corporate training, you will find yourself working with a team, and a number of elements will hamper your best efforts:

1. The team leader isn’t there.

2. The wrong team is receiving the training.

3. The right people are not in the room.

This is like having a piece of the puzzle missing.  Sure you’ll get a result; it just won’t be the best result, and that’s what you’re paid to do.

Thus, where possible, ensure the right people are in the room.
